FROM THE PA STATE DIRECTOR

FROM THE PA STATE DIRECTOR

Written by George Ramsey

Ruthie and I took part in two rides on the weekend of August 13th and 14th.

On Saturday the 13th we had the chance to ride with Chapter A on The Dexter Sturgis Memorial Poker Run to benefit the Four Diamonds Cancer Fund For Children.  Dexter was a member of Chapter A for twelve years and also a member of the Retreads for over twenty years.  It was the Retreads and Mary Lou who organized the ride.  But the ride itself was a covered bridge ride which Dexter and Mary Lou had laid out.

We rode just under fifty miles through scenic Lancaster County crossing eight covered bridges. Ron and Gloria Mentzer led our group with Ken and Gerry Geib (Chapter A Rep) riding tailgunner. Except for a few U-TURNS the ride was beautiful and enjoyable (if you could ignore the stifling heat).  We returned to East Petersburg Park for lunch and socializing and a good time was had by all.

For the inaugural ride, it was a success.  Next year it will be even better.  A fun time for a good cause.  What could be better?  Congratulations Mary Lou and Retreads.

            And Dexter. WELL DONE SIR.

On Sunday, we rode with our Chapter B on a picnic ride to Lake Wallenpaupack, which has become an annual event.  But this year we were invited to the home of Lisa Weiser’s parents.  Lisa and hubby Mike have been Chapter B members since the beginning of the year, but rode with us previously.  We were led on the ride by Terry and Nancy Gresh and as usual they did a great job.  We met Mike and Lisa at the lake and they led us the rest of the way.

We met Clark and Dottie Maxwell and what a delightful couple they are!  They made us feel like family, showing us their home and Clark even gave Ruthie some wood cutouts for her craft work. We also met their grand daughter, Lisa’s niece who is a beautiful child.

Mike who is a grilling fool, made us some scrumptious hamburgers and hotdogs and he even made macaroni salad.  What a guy!  After we ate, some went swimming and Mr. Maxwell took everybody for a pontoon boat ride around the lake four or five at a time.  It was great fun!

But, alas, there comes a time when one must leave for home.  So after taking a picture to remember them by, we said goodbye to Clark and Dottie and Ava.  Mike and Lisa then led us home. We had to stop for ice cream in Marshalls Creek and man was the Dairy Queen crowded.  One other reason we were glad we stopped, it poured like crazy for a while.  But the rain stopped and the rest of the ride was dry.

Thank you Mike and Lisa and Clark and Dottie for your hospitality and Terry and Nancy for a great ride.

Until we meet again, take good care and be safe.  George Ramsey
