ON LEAVE FROM IRAQ

ON LEAVE FROM IRAQ

On November 21, 2004, we were invited to go down to the VFW and meet with Sergeant First Class Drew Seidel.  There was a small party held in his honor.  Sergeant Seidel is currently stationed in Fallujah, Iraq.  He was home for a two-week leave over Thanksgiving.  After meeting everyone, and after a light lunch, Sergeant Seidel spoke to the audience.  He is in command of 19 men and their job is to take care of all un-explosive ammunitions, and to search houses for terrorists and explosives.

As it would be expected, we all had questions and Sergeant Seidel took the time to answer each one.  For example: the hottest day out there was 130 degrees, to note all soldiers in full gear adds approx. 50 lbs.   Sergeant Seidel was asked if he felt our soldiers were making a difference in Iraq and without hesitation he replied with a confident “yes.”  He went on to explain that while under Saddam Hussein’s rule the people lived underprivileged repressed, poor and they feared him.  Because of the Americans, for the first time in years, as a united country these people have “hope”.  Of course, Sergeant Seidel was then asked, if what you say is true, then why are they bombing and trying to kill the Americans?  He explained that these groups have placed rewards for the poor if they kill the Americans.

After having the opportunity to speak with a soldier who has first hand experience on the War in Iraq, I find myself holding a high regard for him and other soldiers for their dedication and bravery to serve our country and protect the American people.

I sit in my home and think about my dad and all the petty things to complain about in my life and I realize that there is so much I take for granted, I wouldn’t have many of the things I have or the freedom to say and do as I wish if it wasn’t for people like Sergeant Seidel.  I salute Sergeant Seidel and all the soldiers for putting their lives on the line for me.  I hope everyone here can say a prayer for these men and women so they may return home safely to their loved ones.

Note:    Sergeant Seidel is the son of Dave & Doris Seidel, members of Pennsylvania Chapter “B”.
