LAKE GEORGE IN THE WINTER
LAKE GEORGE IN THE WINTER
Reprinted from PA Chapter “A” Newsletter
Written by Gerry Geib
The Pughs planned a weekend to the winter carnival in Lake George, New York and opened it up to anyone who wanted to go. Two couples decided to join them. The Yohns and the Geibs. We started out on Friday morning, stopped for breakfast, then on the road again. It was a fairly nice day, but we did ride through some snow squalls that weren’t too bad for Betty as long as Denny was sleeping. We had a real nice trip and got there abut 2:30. We took a walk down town and found that the town was pretty dead and cold, so we went back to the motel and saw that the Yohn’s were just arriving. We gave them just enough time to put their things in their room and then off we went to find a Geocache. All six of us piled into Denny’s car. By now it’s getting dark so we went back to the motel for a drink and some chit chat before going off to George’s for steak and seafood. On the way back I said to Denny “If you see a store I really need some chap stick”, so Denny aims to please and sets off in this sleepy town to find chap stick. Betty said I think there is a store up the road, so off we go on a mission to find me chap stick. We have now driven about 5 miles and I said that’s ok; Betty said it’s just up the road, I think Betty said “it’s just up the road” five times till we finally found it, 10 ½ miles later. Three of us go into the store. Picture this, in the middle of the store there was Clyde pushing buttons and Nancy dancing to a devil hamster singing Hot Stuff. I got out of the store like I didn’t know them. When they returned to the car they shared their experience with the rest and this caused Denny to make a u-ee in the parking lot because he wanted it. We go back to the motel where we chiseled Ken out of the rumble seat. Let’s play a game. Marbles seem to be the game for the chapter. Ken made a board for six and since everyone except Denny had played before, we let him have a few advantages. Soon it was time to say good night. The next day Betty shared with us that Denny thought we play pretty cut throat (little did he know). We all pile back into the Tahoe and off for breakfast, then off for another geocache. We found one but did not find the other, but we did walk along a beautiful water fall. (one walked into the falls). Back to the Motel and then we walked down to the events. The Lake had 22” of ice; there were snowmobiles, 4 wheelers, cars, trucks, and motorcycles everywhere. They had a circular track set up and had races with 4 wheelers and 2 wheels. It was so neat to watch. Denny said he was going for a bowl of soup, so we all followed him, “I always said I would follow Denny & Betty anywhere” but I changed my mind after ¾ of a mile doing peepie step across Lake George, which is not what I call fun. Something to eat and then off to watch the water snowmobile jump. They had bubblers running in around the docks and there was open water about the size of my front yard. The guy jumped through it many times (pretty awesome). A couple standing near us told us that the previous week a guy tried it, and didn’t make it, and all about the rescue. Sorry, the Polar Jump was called off because the bubblier was turned off. (just when I was talked into doing it). Back to the room for a nap. Geanne had cheese and crackers, so we all went to the Geib’s room for some pre dinner snacks and a Game. Denny was not given his “just learning” advantage this time, so now he knows what real cut throat is. We went to dinner where we had reservations at a restaurant that was facing the ice, and we were able to see the fireworks on the ice. It was cold setting at window, but not as cold as outside and the fireworks were nice. (All I have to say is NY needs a Pennsylvania Dutch cook to teach them how to cook). Back to the room for more marbles. Weather forecast does not sound good fod Monday 4” to 8”, let’s not screw up such a good weekend let’s head out Sunday, we all agreed. Trip home was nice, and all I have to say about that is you never know who you will run into when you stop for pie, and we also learned Denny still has the big equipment skills. Thanks Denny and Betty for such good memories. If laughter is good for the soul ours should be pretty clean now. (P.S. Clyde and Denny are the marbles champs).
